Lurkingintheshadowsofeventhemostunsuspectingoperations—fromcorporatetocommercialtoindustrialfacilities—isaconditionknownaspoorvoltagequality,ahiddenexpensethattypicallygoesundetectedandundiagnoseduntilcostlyfailuresoccur.Voltageeventsinterruptsensitiveprocesses,shortentheusefullifeofequipment,andcausecomputerandcommunicationsproblems.Oftentimes,thesedisturbancestriggerneedlessexpensesintheformofimplementedsolutionstomisdiagnosedproblems.Unlessthesourceoftheproblemiscorrectlyidentifiedanditscausefoundandrepaired,thecostsandtimerequiredtosolvetheproblemaddupquickly.

- Harmonics
ACvoltageisasinewavethatrepeats60timespersecond(Hertz=cycles/second).Thisisthefundamentalfrequency.Harmonicsarealternatefrequenciesthatdistortthesinusoidalwaveform.Totalharmonicdistortion(THD)ismeasuredasapercentageofthefundamentalfrequency.Equipmentrunswellonvoltagethatisaclean(orslightlydistorted)sinewave.Highlevelsofdistortionmaycauseequipmentproblems.Onsingle-phasebranchcircuits,levelsofTHDgreaterthan5to8shouldbeinvestigated.
